Lord Smith of Ranmoor is the Non‑Executive Chair of Cranswick plc and one of the UK’s most experienced leaders in the food and agriculture sector.

Tim’s career spans senior roles in food manufacturing, government regulation and retail. He served as Group Quality Director at Tesco plc from 2012 to 2017, following five years as Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency.

Earlier in his career, he led major food businesses including Arla and Sara Lee as CEO. He has held several significant government appointments, chairing the Trade and Agriculture Commission, co‑chairing the Food and Drink Sector Council, and serving on the Food Strategy Advisory Board.

He was awarded a CBE in 2022 for services to agriculture, food and drink trade policy, and became a Life Peer in 2026, taking the title Lord Smith of Ranmoor, in the City of Sheffield.

He is a Non‑Executive Director of Pret A Manger, Pro‑Chancellor and Chair of Sheffield Hallam University, and Chair of Natasha’s Foundation.
