Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, with alternate weekend working

About the Role

To actively managed and be involved with all areas of the pig breeding unit and its staff in order to meet

the business requirements as determined by the Company. To work in accordance with all Company

People Related Policies and all Farm Compliance, Health & Safety and Environmental Policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all full time and agency staff on the unit
  • Responsible for the condition of livestock on the unit - feeding, moving, serving, treating,
  • vaccinating and handling the pigs
  • Ensure that animal welfare is in accordance with Company policies (RSPCA Assured Standards
  • and the five freedoms in respect of animal welfare)
  • Ensure that all equipment/farm machinery (fixed and movable) is used safely and for the
  • purpose it is designed for and remains in good condition at all times
  • Adhere to Company Policies (as noted in the above Job Purpose) at all times
  • Support staff to understand the importance of bio-security and security of the unit, checking all
  • gates are locked, as appropriate, at all times
  • Have overall site responsibility ensuring all buildings and compounds are secured out of working
  • hours.
  • Support staff to ensure that all consumables – feed, medicines etc., are used in the correct
  • manner for their intended purpose
  • Manage and complete weekly paperwork with accuracy ensuring it is submitted to the office by
  • 5pm each Friday without delay and keeping records up to date at all times.
  • Be willing to participate in training on the farm unit and in a classroom as required
  • Take responsibility for the unit being kept clean and tidy at all times and presentable to visitors
  • Work with your team to meet designated performance targets, managing performance of staff
  • and pig production to bring about best results
  • Manage full time and agency staff on the unit, helping to provide leadership, commercial focus
  • and direction to the team at all times
  • Maintain positive working relationships with your Line Manager, farm team and landlord
  • Liaise with the Breeding Manager and other Senior Management as required
  • Carry out any other duties in line with your skills, as requested by management
  • Ensure unit is adequately staffed at all times and advise of the need for cover staff when
  • required
  • Agree personal holiday requests with the Breeding Manager/Assistant Breeding Manager
  • Responsible for recording absence and attendance of all staff and approving all staff holiday
  • requests in a timely manner
  • Managing all employee relation issues, requesting support when necessary
  • Liaise with HR where required in order to provide information or complete documentation
  • Ensure that the welfare of staff is in accordance with Company policy
  • Identify training needs of staff and assist/support in their training and development
  • Lead by example and ensure appropriate behaviour and conduct of yourself and your team at all times
  • Ensure that any breach of animal welfare is dealt with swiftly, according to Company policy
  • Ensure that equipment is used safely and for the purpose it was designed for
  • Report any Health & Safety and operational issues to the H&S Manager and Breeding Manager as quickly as possible
  • Ensure equipment is only to be used by those trained and qualified to use it
  • All site damage to be recorded and reported to the Breeding Manager.
  • Ensure that company mobile phone is operable and faults are reported immediately – the Company mobile phone should be available at all times on the unit. When absent, you must ensure that the mobile phone is available prior to any period of absence.

About You

  • Participate in Front Line Management Development Training
  • Be competent to carry out group and site induction training
  • The ability to prioritise and complete tasks fully and timely
  • Attention to detail is essential
  • Self-motivation with a strong work ethic
  • Working towards gaining the Level 3 in H&S. Either IOSH Managing Safely or Cranswick equivalent
  • All relevant risk assessments and safe working procedures are reviewed and to current methods
  • Hazards and near miss reporting training
  • Good communication skills
  • UK driving licence

  • Assistant Farm Manager (where applicable) and all Farm Unit staff
  • Breeding Manager and Assistant Breeding Manager
  • Senior Management Team
  • The wider Cranswick team where necessary

Additional Requirements

  • Ensure that you understand and adhere to your personal responsibilities with regards to the
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 or Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order SI
  • 1978/1039:

  • operate with your employer on health and safety matters.
  • Anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare must not be intentionally
  • or recklessly interfered with or misused.
  • Responsible to ensure that the training needs of your department are understood, and
  • your direct staff have the relevant training required to carry the tasks they are
  • undertaking safely.
  • Ensuring effective engagement & participation with safety tours, committee meetings,
  • risk assessment, accident investigations, hazard & near miss reporting, took box talks /
  • safety focus. Ensuring all relevant safety inspections are undertaken and documented as
  • required and any defects / issues are resolved in a timely manner. These include
  • management safety inspections and pre-start checks.
  • Coaching and mentoring your team through periods of change, especially the introduction of new equipment, or changes in layout.
  • Responsible for monitoring & reviewing staff behaviours, challenging unsafe behaviours / practices and correcting them.
  • Ensure effective communication to all direct reports on awareness of KPI’s; accidents, hazard & near misses.
  • Responsible for accident investigations, to ensure these are completed to the required standard and in a timely manner, root cause is established, and any corrective actions assigned.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance to company policies, procedures, site rules and information and instruction given by your employer.
  • To respect and honour the sentiment of the Cranswick ethical policies and codes of conduct, when interacting with your colleagues at all times.
  • To work in an Environmental and Energy efficient manner and to respect and honour the sentiment of the Cranswick Environmental and Energy policies and Second Nature principles.
  • Where there are any Environmental Permit conditions in place, to ensure that where you have direct influence on these areas, then these are adhered to within the required limits.
  • To work in partnership with the Senior Management team to be part of the Culture of the site which drives Animal Welfare, H&S, Ethical, Environmental and Energy behaviours.
