Boar Technician — Cornhill on Tweed
Location: Cornhill on Tweed, Northumberland
Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, with weekend working (flexibility required)
About the Role
JSR Genetics Ltd, a subsidiary of Cranswick, is a leading organisation within the UK agricultural sector, combining traditional farming practices with modern, sustainable methods.
As an Boar Technician, you will play an active role in the production and supply of high-quality genetic material, contributing to efficient and sustainable pig farming. You will be responsible for the care of boars and supporting the collection of genetic material for artificial insemination, ensuring all procedures meet strict animal welfare and hygiene standards.
You will also support the daily movement of approximately 200 pigs to and from the collection yard as part of routine operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect genetic material from boars in accordance with established protocols
- Support the production of high-quality breeding material for artificial insemination
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of the collection area
- Move pigs between housing units and the collection yard
- Monitor animal behaviour and welfare throughout the process
- Maintain accurate records of collections and observations
- Clean and disinfect equipment and work areas to maintain high biosecurity standards
About You
- Experience working with livestock (pigs preferred but not essential)
- Confidence working around large animals
- Good physical fitness
- Ability to follow procedures with attention to detail
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team
