Cranswick Plant New Woodland to Capture Carbon

As part of our Net Zero by 2040 commitment, all our owned farms will be certified carbon neutral by 2030. To do this, we’re already investing in regenerative climate smart solutions to accelerate their net zero future.

Trees are vital in the fight against climate change. A woodland ecosystem captures carbon and locks it away for hundreds of years, which is crucial in the fight against global warming and the protection of our planet.

We’ve just planted 1500 native trees and shrubs over 1.17 hectares (equivalent to just over a rugby union field) under the Woodland Trust’s MOREwoods scheme.

This new woodland on our farmland will help to prevent flooding and pollution whilst enriching the soil with nutrients, increasing biodiversity and providing a habitat for wildlife. A bespoke mix of over 12 different trees and shrubs selected specifically for their carbon and ammonia capturing capabilities has been planted, including the Common Oak, Silver Birch, Rowan, Holly and Hawthorn.

In 2020, we accelerated our ambition by committing to become a Net Zero business by 2040 - ten years ahead of the overall UK target. We recently signed up to Amazon’s Climate Pledge and are one of 37 signatories to ‘Meat in a Net Zero World’ developed under the Courtauld Commitment 2025 which seeks to improve productivity, tackle deforestation, cut emissions and reduce the amount of meat wasted in the UK every year.
