With sustainability at the forefront of Cranswick’s Second Nature strategy, the business has worked collaboratively with Coveris to support Lidl in transforming its fresh sausage packaging. Moving away from a non-recyclable paper/PET/PE triple plastic and paper laminate, Lidl’s sausages are now packed in MonoFlexPP, Coveris’ mono-material, which can now be recycled at supermarkets. This transition delivers impressive sustainability, presentation and operational benefits, making Lidl’s sausage packaging stand out on shelf.
The switch from a non-recyclable triple laminate to Coveris’ two-ply PP laminate has made Lidl’s fresh sausage packaging fully recyclable through back-to-store soft plastic recycling schemes. Through this change, Cranswick, Coveris and Lidl are actively working towards reducing their carbon footprint.
By updating the packaging for Lidl’s five-line sausage range from 84-micron paper-laminate packs to Coveris’ 50-micron PP laminate packs, Lidl has achieved an impressive 30% packaging weight reduction, equivalent to 10 tonnes of material each year! This change not only provides sustainability benefits but also enhances presentation. To create a ‘butcher’s feel’, a special tactile finish has been applied, giving the packs a unique paper-like appearance whilst offering substantial environmental savings.
Working together, Cranswick and Coveris’ latest innovation has supported Lidl to transform its sausage packaging and deliver standout sustainability benefits.
