Health and Safety

Cranswick are committed to high standards of Health & Safety, it is an integral part of our business and we are committed to ongoing yearly improvements. It is fully endorsed by the Board of Directors. We work in partnership with our insurers to achieve excellent standards of Health & Safety.

There is a large Group Health & Safety team, led by the Group Health & Safety Manager, with the assistance of two Group Health & Safety Co-Ordinators. These are supported at every site by a dedicated full-time Health & Safety Co-Ordinator, to fulfil the required levels of Health & Safety, both pro-active and re-active, at site, that is required. All are trained to NEBOSH standards.

We also have a Group Machinery Safety Co-Ordinator in the team. His job role is to safety compliant assess all new and current machinery within the business. He also trains the Engineering teams in machinery safety.

The Group Health & Safety Manager presents a quarterly Health & Safety report to the Main Board, and subsidiary Directors which includes accident and claims statistics.

In 2013 we exceeded our RIDDOR reports reduction of 5% on the previous year, by achieving a 36% reduction in total, and a 43% reduction against increased staffing levels.

2014 2nd quarter RIDDOR statistics show a further 14% reduction against a 5% target, on the 2013 reduction, to date.

These reductions can be attributed to improved working environments and good site Health & Safety team management from all.

Each site Director has achieved the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health qualification, “Safety for Senior Executives”.

All sites within the Group have achieved the British Standard 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems) in Health & Safety, apart from the new facility at the Yorkshire Baker, who will achieve the requirement very soon.

All sites are internally audited to ensure that standards of Health & Safety are maintained and improved. Also, the Groups insurers carry out their own audits at all sites and confirm the excellent standards of Health & Safety within the Group.

The Company is committed to excellent Health & Safety training of not only its employees, but also agency workers. All receive a full Health & Safety induction course, which includes Fire Safety & Manual Handling training.

All receive suitable task and machinery training in their working environment to operate in a safe manner.

This training is key to the success of our Health & Safety standards. We also provide the required on-going Health & Safety training throughout their time with the business.

The business has suitable systems in place for the communication of Health & Safety and training of the non-English speaking workforce, where required.

The Board of Directors fully support all future developments for Health & Safety and the ongoing Risk Reduction Programme as an integral part of the business.
