Tech­ni­cal Manager

Cranswick Gourmet Sausage Co. (Lazenby’s) is our fast-paced sausage facility located in Hull. Using only the best cuts of British pork, fresh herbs and spices, Cranswick are the UK’s leading producer of gourmet sausages and burgers, supplying major retailers and foodservice outlets alike.

The main duties of the role include:

Responsible for the Technical operation and systems for the site, maintaining technical standards, in line with legislation and customer requirements. Ensuring the members of the technical team are also effectively implementing and managing in line with legislative and customer operating standards.

  • Responsible for product quality, safety, and legality
  • Accountable for the technical and quality assurance function of the site meeting company, legislative, customer and 3rd party accreditation body standards
  • Ensuring that the Technical Team is adequately trained and that any further training needs are identified
  • Liaison with suppliers and customers
  • Ensuring that the company’s quality systems are fully compliant with current standards and customer requirements
  • Ensuring that any customers KPIs are supplied in an accurate and timely fashion
  • Maintenance of the HACCP Food Safety Plan
  • Leadership of the HACCP Food Safety Team
  • Ensures that technical resource is available for involvement in trials associated with Technical, NPD, Engineering, Manufacturing, Packaging, Hygiene, etc.
  • Advising other members of the Senior Management Team about quality, food safety and legislative requirements
  • Develop expertise across the site, fully understanding the processes and constraints, to continuously improve food safety, legality and quality compliance across the site, in conjunction with other members of the operations team
  • Keeping abreast of changes in technology, legislation and customer requirements to ensure that the company is always fully conversant with the latest information
  • Responsible for retrieving data, compiling and presenting ad hoc technical reviews to site and company senior management
  • Management of quarterly site and monthly retailer KPI reports
  • The provision of suitable technical resource to lead site technical audits and visits
  • Responsible for identifying areas in which there is a perceived need to drive down customer and consumer complaints YOY, based upon CPMU (and actual number where appropriate)
  • Ensuring all specifications are in place, signed and up to date
  • Accountable for ensuring that complaint investigations are completed in a timely, yet thorough manner, with root cause analysis completed and documented and preventative actions implemented to either reduce or eliminate the risk of recurrence where possible
  • Accountable for ensuring that internal contamination incident investigations are completed in a timely, yet thorough manner, with root cause analysis completed and documented and preventative actions implemented to either reduce or eliminate the risk of recurrence where possible (in conjunction with other departments)
  • Leads independent projects as and when the need arises, ensuring that all company, legislative, customer and 3rd party accreditation body standards are considered
  • Undertake such ad-hoc duties as maybe required to benefit the business
  • To always act in the best interest of Cranswick Gourmet Sausage
  • Be conversant with four strategic pillars (QVIP). Champion this within the department and the wider site

People:

  • Identification and planning of production related training needs (to always ensure adequate cover of key skills).
  • Managing all ER related issues, including disciplinaries, performance management
  • The investigation and documentation of incidents relating to poor performance, breaches of procedure, damage to company property and other staff related issues
  • Conducting appraisals from week 1 of everyone’s employment and thereafter every 6 months
  • Managing talent and succession planning, recording through HR
  • Promoting and leading change management through driving good behaviours and leading by example (specific competencies identified)

The successful candidate will:

  • Educated to at least degree level, or with a minimum of 3 years industry experience in Technical Management
  • All Level 4 HACCP, Food Hygiene and Listeria Qualifications
  • Experience of Retailer Codes of Practices / BRC standard
  • Experience of man management and team development
  • Experience of handling face to face contact with Retailers
  • IT literate
  • Attention to detail
  • Organisational skills, ability to manage workload and prioritise
  • Logical analytical thinker
